1969 Revisited: Back in Europe, Munich Olympics
Right after graduation, "Dipl. Ing. Architect" Mika Milo (nickname for Miroslav Milovancev) was fortunate to join the famous team of Professor Benisch & Partners and Otto Frei, architects for the Olympic Games structures, Munich 1972. Pedaling across the city on a borrowed bike to the office each day, he spent two years designing the interior architecture and public spaces of the most daring, huge tension structures covering the entire sports- fields; an engineering and architectural experience of a magnitude never seen before. Knowledge gained there, enthusiasm and a spirit of invention and collaboration among an international team of architects and engineers, will be an inspiration for Mika for many years to come. He stayed in Munich for the next seven years successfully participating in a number of architectural and urban planning design competitions across Germany.
As an accomplished and registered architect in Germany, and a full member of Bavarian "Architekten-Kammer", yet lured by challenges and anticipations of the "New World", he immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1979.
1992 Revisited: M.A.G. Year of Birth
Instead of going away for three weeks of earned vacation, Mika Milo assembled a small multi-disciplined design team, including a general contractor, and entered a nationwide design-build competition for a U.S. Navy Clubhouse project. After a lot of hard work and extensive exploration of various creative ideas for this prominent ocean front site on the tip of Point Loma, the design was submitted along with 24 other competing entries. A month later the most wonderful news ever reached our small office; our team won the First Prize Award and Commission to do the project! What a great start for M.A.G.! Some 16 months later, on time and within the budget, the project was successfully completed, and praised by the U.S. Navy as the model clubhouse project used as a "prototype" around the world. |
