Profile: About Lakeside A peaceful, country feeling settles over you as you enter Lakeside, one of San Diego County’s original western towns. Lakeside is a proud community with a rural atmosphere and a sense of hometown traditions. Located about 25 miles east of downtown San Diego and only minutes from the mountains and deserts, it consists of 75 square miles and has an elevation range of 450 to 1000 feet above sea level. The climate is mild with an annual daily temperature of 62.2 degrees. The sun shines seven out of ten days, and with less than ten inches of rainfall annually, it results in many outside activities on a year-round basis. While Lakeside is an unincorporated area of San Diego County, and governed by the County Board of Supervisors, it has several advisory committees to the County. The Lakeside Planning Group advises on matters of planning and land use where a focus on family living are important to the area’s growth plans. The Design Review Board, Upper San Diego River Improvement Committee, Chamber of Commerce, and Historical Society also advise and inform the County on their respective issues. Second District Supervisor Dianne Jacob’s Revitalization Steering Committee addresses concerns of the citizenry at large. Lakeside enjoys a diverse mix of businesses including commercial, industrial, and agricultural. With approximately 1,100 businesses, many of them small and home-based, the town manages to preserve a sense of spaciousness and hometown comfort. Horseback riding, hiking, fishing, and boating are just a few of the outdoor activities. Lakeside is proud of its four lakes and eight parks. Lindo Lake, located in the center of town, is the only natural lake in all of San Diego County. Lakeside is known for its annual Western Days Parade, Lakeside Rodeo, Maine Avenue Street Dance and Spirit of Christmas events. Exceptional educational opportunities are available at its seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools, along with several private schools. HISTORY In 1886, the El Cajon Valley Land Company purchased 6,000 acres of land - now known as Lakeside. A large four-story Lakeside Inn was built as a resort. The Inn was designed by the same architect who designed the Hotel del Coronado. G.H. Mansfield (Vice-President of the land company) built the Castle House in 1887 as a show place and it still remains today. Eight trains ran through Lakeside every day bringing many visitors to the area. Many historical buildings still remain in the town site area on Maine Avenue such as: The Town Hall (1911); Ross House (1905); Neal House (1900) next to the Olde Community Church (1896); Park Market burned down in 1997, Payton’s Hardware rebuilt in the same spot in 1999. The old Lindo Hotel (1887), now the Lakeside Hotel, stands on the corner of River and Lakeshore; The Hartung Bakery (1914) - Later Dent’s Bakery - was built on Lakeshore. A two-mile race track was built around Lindo Lake and on April 20, 1907, Barney Oldfield set a world speed record at the race track. Activities such as boating, horse and auto racing, were popular with the Inn’s guests. (The original Boathouse has been preserved at Lindo Lake Park.) Lakeside soon became nationally recognized as a resort center. The commitment to preserving Lakeside history began in 1972, when a group of local people met to organize the Lakeside Historical Society, and carry on the work of Florence Beadle, a self appointed historian who researched and recorded Lakeside’s early beginning. From 21 charter members, the Lakeside Historical Society has grown to a membership of over 500 and many of those are life members. Meetings are held the 4th Monday of each month at 7:00p.m. at the Olde Community Church. Visitors are always welcome. Their store and research center are located at the rear of the church, and are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
