Profile: t’s easy to get excited about technologies that enable thin clients and PDAs to talk to mission-critical COBOL applications, or that make it easy to replace COBOL "green screens" with truly graphical front ends. Technologies that modernize COBOL can revolutionize your business. But when it comes time to incorporate these fresh approaches into your business plan, it is the combination of winning technologies and the people who stand behind them that formulate success. read more hide At Acucorp, our people are our greatest asset. We know that our exceptional technologies, business model, and services are all products of innovative, dedicated individuals. We know that when you invest in Acucorp® solutions, you are putting your faith in our people. People you can reach by phone. People who will go the extra mile to make technology work for you. People who will remain steadfast in their vision of COBOL in the modern world. Innovators and Entrepreneurs Acucorp is filled with innovators, entrepreneurs, and visionaries who make it their mission to move COBOL forward. Consider the story of Acucorp itself. In 1980, Pamela Coker, President and CEO of Acucorp, co-founded a hardware and software integration firm for the defense industry. In addition to providing hardware to the Department of Defense, the firm developed two basic software applications, one of which grew to be the mainstay of the business. It was a cost accounting application written in COBOL. Later in the year, Pamela’s younger brother, Drake Coker, a student of Mathematics and Computer Science at UCSD, joined his sister’s company and began wiring computers and solving software problems. "Drake has always been very gifted," Pamela said recently. "Just present him with a problem and he can’t not solve it." In the early 1980s, Drake invented his own file system, now known as "Vision," because the file system supplied by the company’s COBOL vendor created too many physical files for the UNIX environment. Later, Drake designed his own runtime to circumvent a program size limit imposed by the other COBOL and to solve mathematical bugs. Best of all, his runtime made the program very portable. Eventually, Drake wondered how hard designing a new compiler could be. Before long, he developed a system that compiled the accounting software in three minutes rather than 30-45 minutes and that implemented a better debugger. While Drake was "solving problems" at the company, Pamela noticed that things at the COBOL vendor were changing and that many COBOL customers were looking for alternatives. She sensed that perhaps the time had come for her company to shift gears from the application software market to the application tools market. In November 1988, Acucobol, Inc. was born with just six employees. Three months later, the company humbly introduced its compiler at a UNIX show in San Francisco as "The Most Portable COBOL in the Universe." Pamela introduced herself to many UNIX vendors that day and offered to have her technical team create ports to their UNIX platform on the spot. John McCoy, a Senior Developer who is still with the company today, quickly cranked out nearly a dozen ports. This made a huge impression on observers who otherwise had to spend untold time and money to port their software to different platforms. One company offered to buy the revolutionary development system on the spot. Not only was Acucobol not set up to take a credit card, but Pamela and Drake realized they hadn’t even discussed pricing! The rest, as they say, is history. Acucobol, Inc. spent the next decade building a solid customer base, enhancing the compiler, and inventing related and vital legacy application extension tools. In 1998, we changed our name to Acucorp, Inc., but our commitment to COBOL remains the same. Today, we have more than 4000 customers and one million end users, as well as offices in 5 countries and distributors that serve over 75 countries throughout the world. It’s Our Mission From day one, Acucorp had a vision of mission-critical business applications running anywhere, connecting to any data source. Drake presented this vision at conferences in 1989, and he presents the same vision today. Acucorp is and always has been dedicated to extending and enhancing the life of legacy applications. We know that built into these applications are the rules that run your business, fine-tuned through years of experience. We started by creating the most portable COBOL on the market. Then we added capabilities for connecting to data sources and for creating a graphical front end in COBOL. As the business world evolved, we kept pace. With the introduction of e-commerce, we developed tools to Web-enable COBOL and connect it to Java. With the advent of mobile computing, we developed mobile and thin client solutions that provide connectivity to remote COBOL applications. Our basic message has always been the same: COBOL has lasting power. You can stay current without abandoning your investment in applications that define your business. It’s Our Passion Of course, Pamela and Drake aren’t the only ones at Acucorp who are passionate about COBOL. Time and again our systems engineers, support technicians, developers, sales professionals, quality control analysts, communicators, and administrative staff demonstrate dedication to their work and commitment to excellence. Take, for example, Acucorp Systems Engineer, Steve Hjerpe. Steve recently convinced a team of 23 government consultants that its previous recommendation for a contractor to scrap its tried-and-true COBOL application was unnecessary. After hearing about Acucorp’s solutions, the consultants realized that Acucorp could enhance the contractor’s application and move it forward, without losing any functionality or business rules in the process. Our Technical Support department is renowned as well. Customers find it is easy to contact our support technicians and systems engineers like Jon Scally and Nigel Eaton, and often, the person they talk to is the same one who worked with them years ago. Our development staff is also long-lasting, providing stability and unity to our diverse suite of solutions. Developers like Randy Zack, Gary Henry, and John McCoy have been with the company from the early days. Drake Coker is now Chief Scientist and Vice President of Development. Other COBOL veterans like Bob Cavanagh and Gerold Ekström exemplify the way that Acucorp listens and responds to customer needs. As a Product Manager, Bob listens to customers about how they use our products and recommends enhancements for future releases. As Vice President Strategic Direction, Gerold keeps the company in sync with the global marketplace by listening to customers, software vendors, and consultants about emerging technologies and trends. Why do people stay at Acucorp so long? As Joe Horlander at Seagram Americas puts it, "What these guys are doing should be shouted from the rooftops!" Our employees feel that way, too. More Than a Technology Company Acucorp is a technology company that takes great pride in the excellence of its business solutions. But more than that, we are a human company with a passion for our work, an entrepreneurial spirit, a dedication to do our best, and a commitment to our customers and the language they hold dear: COBOL.
