| Profile: | Pioneers Then, Visioneers Now
It's a short story spanning ten years -- the story of four Web pioneers that led the digital marketing revolution.
It started when Marlene Matheson, Vic Spindler, Mike ZeMans and Dana Todd tapped the potential of the Internet back in 1994. At the time, Netscape was still an unknown company and Yahoo! was known as Jerry's Guide to the World Wide Web. They realized companies would need help bringing their offerings to the Internet. SiteLab, known as Bien Logic, became a driving force as an innovative Website developer and Web application designer.
One of the first Web portals (1994, PlanetEarth.net) was designed by SiteLab. The second banner ad (1994) ever designed was created by SiteLab. The first Web-based chat room? SiteLab. CyberCash Micropayments, circa 1996. We were on the beta team, and we helped many companies in the early years to develop online payment systems for e-commerce. We sponsored and organized San Diego's first Internet SIG in 1994, and many local and national visionaries participated. We earned our stripes in the field, not in a classroom.
In 1996, it became clear to SiteLab's management that merely building Websites was not enough to satisfy clients' long-term marketing needs. The Internet growth was exponential and sites were already competing for audience attention. It was decided the best way to serve our customers' future needs was to become a full service interactive agency, offering a broad suite of integrated marketing and engineering services designed to build brands and enhance visibility on the Internet.
Since then, we have maintained our pioneer position and leadership by embracing search engine optimization methodology, so much so that each new site development project we do includes a keyword strategy, and we discuss with clients the tradeoffs of design elements vs. search visibility. Our online advertising campaigns and unique application development are customized to specific marketing goals. We are a soup to nuts solution for clients who do not wish to maintain an inhouse Web team, or a trustworthy partner to supplement inhouse resources.

| Specialty: | The Minds Behind the Mission
SiteLab is privately held by three agency principals: Marlene Matheson, Dana Todd and Mike ZeMans. Each principal governs a different aspect of the company, from operations to creative development, and from online marketing to programming. SiteLab's management team are leaders in their fields, with a rich and lengthy combined resume of skills including large project management, graphic design, Website design and development, database programming and e-commerce development, Internet marketing, search engine marketing, email campaigns and Website analytics.
Marlene Matheson, CEO
Marlene Matheson has led SiteLab from a 5-person spinoff to becoming one of the Top 50 Interactive Agencies in the world. She has a wealth of experience in sales, marketing, human resources and management, acquired over 30 years in various industries, including high-tech, pharmaceutical, banking and real estate/mortgage, and non-profit. A native of Canada, she was nominated for San Diego Woman of the Year in 1993, and brings to SiteLab a strong dedication to client service and broad-based business knowledge. Marlene started in the Internet space in 1994, leading SiteLab's predecessor to become an early global player in Web design and online community development.
Dana Todd, Executive Vice President
Press, industry analysts and technology leaders frequently tap Dana for her knowledge of the search engine marketplace. She regularly appears as a top speaker at national and international conferences such as @d:tech and Jupiter Media's Search Engine Strategies. Dana talks candidly about the pros and cons of leading search engine marketing programs, and speaks from experience. Her passion for helping clients utilize the search space, while still upholding core branding principles, has helped evolve SiteLab's best practices over the years, to touch every single department and project in terms of understanding the search engine impacts, and to develop content and designs specifically for search engine marketing as part of standard operating procedures.
Mike ZeMans, Vice President
Mike ZeMans can honestly brag that he built some of the first commercial sites on the World Wide Web (remember when all sites had a gray background?). His knowledge of information architecture, user flow efficiencies and technical requirements is an essential part of his leadership in running the site development departments. He's finicky about programming and interface quality, which is a good thing. Mike has a BA in Applied Mathematics - Economics, University of California, Riverside; plus, an MA, Applied Mathematics - Psychology, University of California, San Diego. Mike was one of the founding members of SiteLab in 1994, when it was still Bien Logic.
John Gaffney, Chief Technology Officer
John Gaffney is responsible for investigating and developing processes and technologies that enable SiteLab's continued leadership in search engine marketing and online marketing campaigns. John is a senior technology marketing executive with extensive experience in product management, product marketing and business development at both Fortune 500 and startup companies. He recently served as Area Vice President, Solutions Marketing for Peregrine Systems, Inc., and as Vice President, Marketing, for Akonix Systems, Inc., both San Diego-based developers of enterprise IT software. John has served on the Technical Committee of the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO), and is a past Vice President of Communications for the San Diego Software Industry Council. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Technical Communication, with a minor in Electrical Engineering, from the University of Florida.
Carmella Spencer, Vice President of Sales & Marketing
A pioneer in the internet advertising space with a passion for creative ways to leverage the web, Carmella Spencer brings over 10 years of internet experience to Sitelab. In 1997, Carmella was part of the original web team for SignOnSanDiego.com, website of the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper where she helped to lead in the creation and growth the newspaper website; now the largest and most visited local internet destination in Southern California. After five years at SignOnSanDiego.com, Spencer moved to television as the General Sales Manager for TheSanDiegoChannel.com, KGTV 10, the local ABC affiliate and a division of Internet Broadcasting Systems (IBS) and later adding her expertise to the email marketing solutions company, BlueHornet Networks, as General Manager. Most recently as Director of Marketing for the American Council on Exercise (ACE), a non-profit organization servicing the fitness community, Carmella built the ACE brand and grew revenue through traditional marketing channels, internet initiatives, and website and ecommerce strategies. Additionally, Spencers background includes several years in corporate training and human resource management as well as an 18-year management tenure with American Airlines.
Julie Stoll, Controller
Julie recently joined SiteLab after 10 years in the Medical Manufacturing industry. She has worked as a Plant Controller responsible for the plant accounting function for a medical device manufacturer. Her background also includes 10 years of programming, system implementation, general and cost accounting. She has an MBA in Finance and a B.S. in Information Systems both from San Diego State University. |
